Visit http://cmsupport.wordpress.com/ for the latest information on the city's continuing smear campaign against participants in the 8.31 CM and to find ways to support those still facing charges (like donating money for their legal defense!).

Pass the link along to any who might be interested.

It's the same as anything. Don't disobey laws and the cops will leave you alone. Critical Mass, in my experience of seeing their rides, seems to stir the pot first. I know I shouldn't speak for the entire congregation of riders, but it seems to be an edgy sort of ride. I own a bike and ride with friends, but, for the sake of my safety, I abide by the traffic laws. I realize the message is to "disrupt," and to "make people aware." However, some day , someone is going to seriously get hurt. Motorist, biker, police officer...it's going to happen. And then what? Now your entire ride will be clouded with the "someone died at that event" title. Is that what they want? Is that the type of risk you want to take in the sustainability of your group.

@Charlie

It is my understanding that since Critical Mass is not an organization per se but an informal simultaneous event, they do not seek permits.

However, CM rides have been an ongoing consistent event for many years and established a good relationship with the MPD in the past. Those bikers who did go outside the bounds were arrested or stopped with little fanfare compared to last month.

@Amy E

Have you ever tested your vision after being sprayed at 1 ft and immediately washing it out? If not, let me know what the results are. I'll provide an eye chart if you provide the mace. Thanks!

I think everyone needs to be careful not to group the usual attendees of Critical Mass with the the members of the RNC Welcoming Committee who happened to be attending Critical Mass that evening. The two groups were out there for very different reasons, and I think the situation is, because of how it is being portrayed in the media, very confusing to those that are not familiar with both groups.

Interesting how Joel was sprayed a foot away from his face and was still able to see the police knocking down people with their guns out.
Respect the police, don't ride your stupid bikes in the middle of traffic and you won't have to get your butts kicked.

Noah, do you know if this particular ride had a parade permit or how organizers might have communicated with the MPD in advance of the ride? While a permit seems doubtful, from the initial MPD statement, it sounds like the relationship between Critical Mass and the police was not bad.

In any case, it's surprising the police were not better prepared for something that clearly commanded beyond normal resources and attention.
